20-20 cricket

No, I'm not referring to a small insect with good eyesight - Bree & I attended our first cricket match last night... well, we attempted to, but they canceled the match once they knew that two Americans were in the crowd.

Or maybe it was because of the torrential downpour that threatened to wash away "The Oval".

Perhaps others of you could use a cricket lesson - we certainly learned a great deal. Like in baseball, the object is to score points by hitting the ball either far or well placed. Unlike baseball, you can hit in any direction. If you hit the ball and it reaches the rope then you get four points. If you hit it over the rope, it's worth six points. If you hit it in play, you can run back and forth and get one run for every time you get to the other end... perhaps I'll finish writing out the cricket lesson someday.

For now, let it suffice to say that we enjoyed ourselves, but don't understand how people can watch cricket for five days straight. The match we attended would have been limited to 20 overs a side - we saw all 20 overs for one team, and the first 10 overs for the next team (by the way, only one team hits at a time and they do their entire hitting before they go to the field - one team batted for 2 hours!

We feel much more British now that we've been to the Oval - which was nothing like a million dollar American sports complex. The advertising was much simpler, the main part of the structure has to be decades old. But it did have luxury boxes.

Anyway, it's a late night at work, so I'm going to get back to the grind - let the debate continue on the great author Charles Dicken who founded our church - see comments below. It is the best of times.

well so much for the church history lesson, # 1 question matthew; or you ready for your MOTHER-IN-LAW?????? #2 will your 900 square ft. bungalow be big enough for the tour group.

Hopefully the comment above did not come from Matthew's mother-in-law or any of her immediate family, as I would be severely disappointed in their grammar. Just because it is an online post does not mean that you can toss your education (or obvious lack thereof) out the window.

Regarding the Spurgeon comments below: Othel would be seriously disappointed in you Jess. And shouldn't you be working instead of posting random comments on obscure Aggie blogs?

I remember the apartment drive where I lived behing North Gate in C.S. was always full of guys playing cricket and we had to ask them to move so we could get our cars out...I never did understand the game but am glad that you have taken up such a cutural sport! I will be in town next week, let me know what day is good for you to meet up if possible.

we all know that matthew loves his mother-in-law, and the lady in question is excited about her visit, what's a technophile?

Glad to see that my long lost technophile cousin has rejoined the discussion!

I leave town for a few days and cheap shots are taken. I'm appalled!

Mr. Technoholic - I would appreciate if you would show the respect due my high school english teacher and properly spell her name with two l's and not just one.

Josefy family de London - Cricket match sounded very exciting - however - I can't help but be troubled by the fact that it seems to me that the Brits stole this "sport" from a little game that I used to play in the hallway - called one-base baseball. Please let the proper authorities know that my attorney will be including this as a part of his pro-bono caseload.

I digress - everyone please keep a few of my buddies in your prayers as their Army Reserve unit is leaving for Afghanistan in two weeks - they had their only three day pass since April this weekend and they went back to the base this morning - Edgar, Dusty, Ace and Sleepy are in the 820th Signal Company.

So, is this Jess's site for comments or Bree and Matt's?
I started wondering yesterday - do the Americans in London walk around gloating all day on the fourth? What's all that about?

Bree and Matt post - I comment.
It's really simple.
